It is even slightly older than the Golf, which is identical in construction under the sheet metal, because it was presented 3 months before it. The designer Giorgetto Giugiaro is even more involved in its shape than in that of the Golf. The angular wedge shape is typical of the designer's style at that time. All Scirocco models are built by Karmann.


The name comes from a North African desert wind. Originally it was intended for the Golf parallel to the trade winds (winds between the equator and tropics) which appeared shortly before, but things turned out differently. The sleeker version not only steals the name, but in the course of its development more often the best equipment variants.

Thus the weaker engines are only gradually found in the Scirocco. Drum brakes on the front axle are never used in the Scirocco. Of course, the Golf has to be particularly inexpensive, while the chic coupe attracts more potential buyers. Not quite fitting for this position, however, is the fact that so few copies are left. This has happened more often in the history of the automobile. Manufacturers in need and under time pressure tend to resort to bold designs. The Scirocco I can be regarded as such, which won the hearts of buyers with its appearance, which was actually too angular for a Coupé, from Ital Design. They accepted even the bad cW value.


In the new edition, however, the focus is on house design with flowing lines, which, however, increases the unrecognisability a little. The air resistance is reduced by more than 10% and in the light-flooded and thus significantly brighter interior, especially at the rear, more space is created despite the same floor plan. On the outside you can see the competition with the Opel Manta and the Ford Capri, not least because of the factory spoiler.

Many buyers make additional contributions here. Nevertheless, the car becomes successful in the beginning. Later it will be equipped with a much more powerful engine. But with a weaker engine it will even outlast nor the start of Corrado, which was probably originally intended as a successor. All in all, it is far from reaching its predecessor in the registration figures. This is also due to the significantly increased price.
