We avoid here the often-told story of the 'illegitimate child' 924 and its truck engine. It was therefore needed for the car a unit developed by Porsche. Actually that had to be a V6, but there was the bigger brother 928. Thus, the very strange story was created, where Porsche at the end, known for sporty and race-ready engines, built the largest four-cylinder of the history.
Then the car, however, no longer was called 944. But anyone who believes one has virtually sawn through the V8 of the 928 in order to produce in this way the 944 engine, the has got it wrong. It should have been inclined by 45° as a half V8, but it were only around 30°. Indeed, it had the same stroke but a much larger bore. Overall, in the cylinder spacing was already placed the seed for the 3 litres engine.
However, it was like the engine of the 928 continously of light metal, from the is particularly worked out the hard silicon at the open deck cylinders and its pistons showed an iron or chromium layer. But the combustion chambers were processed by squish edges on possible turbulence of the air-fuel mixture, this allowed a considerably higher compression.
Much more electronics regulated this engine. First, a knock sensor that could take back the ignition within the Motronic. This included an L-Jetronic (928: K-Jetronic), but the 'E' was not yet available, so still had no Lambda control, what then made 13 hp reduced performance. That could make the car particularly interesting for some enthusiasts. In the video below, you can feel a little sound and performance. 05/15
