Porsche 911 Carrera RS

The Carrera model was much closer to a racing version than the 911 S. It adopted the front spoiler from the 911 S and complemented it with a rear spoiler that was considered bulky at the time. This alone gave it a distinctive appearance. The lettering on the side was also anything but subtle. Despite the larger engine and other additional components, the weight was significantly reduced by thinner panes and sheet metal, partly due, of course, to the lack of any comfort.

Those who drove it still say it was one of the fastest and most manageable 911s. Even though the power-to-weight ratio was significantly surpassed by later versions, the combination of a non-turbocharged, very powerful engine with such a lightweight body remained arguably unmatched in the 911 series.

A series of 500 road-legal racing versions had to be produced for homologation, albeit with an even sharper front spoiler. Initial fears that the vehicles might not find buyers due to the oil price crisis proved unfounded. On the contrary, a second series was possible/necessary. The name 'Carrera' was later used to designate special models and subsequently also the production model.

The bore, and thus the displacement, was again increased for the Carrera models. New not only for Porsche was the different tires at the front and rear, which enabled exceptional lateral acceleration. The Carrera RSR, also available for sale, was also available for racing. This also resulted in significant weight savings, reducing the curb weight to 900 kg. The purchase price of the RS seems low by today's standards, but it was 50 percent higher than that of the 911 T.
