2022 Genesis G80 EV

Perhaps it would be good at this point and in this day and age to remember a few principles that seem to have slipped too far from view. Anyone thinking of buying a car, whether new or used, leasing or cash purchase, should first determine their own financial limits.

Can you afford the 'new' vehicle at all, or are you taking incalculable risks? Apart from certain necessities, driving should be a source of joy and not always associated with apprehensions. And why are we mentioning just this when discussing a new electric car?

The first all-electric vehicle from Genesis

Clearly, because the priority here should always be battery capacity. Is this enough for the planned use of the vehicle, or is it too expensive because it is too big or too small, so that you have to recharge in an unpredictable manner, which is expensive and time-consuming? Sometimes the limits can be somewhat softened by possible volume rates and fast loading. Or problems appear, seen on a yearly basis, quite seldom.

In addition to the dream sports car, it seems to be the large sedan in particular that encourages such considerations, and even more so in the all-electric version. Because if the purchase price and cash register or time continuum are correct even after looking at the charging, then the rest can usually be viewed benevolently.

After all, the standard family fits in well, it's more than sufficiently comfortable and has enough air so that drives, whether short or long, should not be a problem. With a new car, you can still give the chassis a certain character by choosing the wheels, according to the motto, better looking and therefore a little harder. When it comes to used cars, with an eye on the costs, you have to make do with what is on offer.

Electric cars are usually quiet anyway and not fast, so the wind noise is kept within reasonable limits. The engine output or torque, although still often judged strictly out o the habit of combustion engines, has long since lost its importance in the electric age. If a compact class often comes along with approx. 150 kW (204 hp), then the large sedan has enough of that anyway.

In our case more than enough, so that ahead can still be separated mechanically if necessary, which is quite unnecessary when considering the principles explained at the beginning. After all, large sedans tend to be found on the aerodynamic side, which favors consumption during normal motorway driving. A top speed of 225 km/h should perhaps be a pleasure as a catalog value, but in practice it probably has no value.

The solar roof with a maximum of 0.7 kWh per day is mercilessly overestimated and recuperation on the motorway, for which such a car seems to be made, actually means that the energy generated by decelerating is wasted again directly. It's a good thing that a car like this actually invites you to linger at a speed once you've chosen it, without making a longer journey more difficult.
