1919 Fiat 702

During the war, Italy had become aware of all that could be manufactured industrially in the country. Which, by the way, more than stood up to comparison with some of the Allies, and in principle even reached world standards.

Nevertheless, the production was limited to rifles including ammunition and other military equipment. We have already described the enormous increase in the production of trucks. But one was also involved in the construction of the aircraft that first appeared in wars.

The production of tractors was hardly possible during the war. But it became more necessary as more men were needed for agriculture and horses were needed for warfare. The USA helped with deliveries from Ford. Nevertheless, in the end there were not as many tractors left as, for example, trucks.

Since Fiat was considered particularly innovative and contributed a lot to reconstruction after the war, the company was given the task of industrially producing the first tractor. And as with the production of equipment suitable for war, this time too it was assumed that friends would also be supplied.

In addition to reconstruction, obtaining foreign currency is the first duty of a country's industry after the war. In this case, there was also the provision of food for the population, which was actually similar to fighting an impending famine. Fiat presented the new 702 to politicians and technical authorities as early as 1918.

This led to the founding of Trattory S.p.A. (Fiatagri). At least in terms of drive, the 702 was developed from the 18BL truck with reduced power to increase the torque. Here, as is usual with tractors, the drive was made in one piece up to and including the rear axle. Outer planets were added later.
