2023 City Transformer CT 1

No, the concept hasn't been thought through to the end yet. But since this is still a prototype that will only go into series production in about two years, things can still change.

So already now at least the doors are hinged in front and open as you are used to from car doors. Of course, the scissor doors were more practical, opening forward above when things got tight to the neighboring vehicle.

But imagine that you have to dive partially through under the door when it rains. The dripping water may even ruin perhaps dark clothing. In addition, difficult-to-open doors are more expensive and require adjustment more often over the years.

It is slowly being developed towards a little more realism relating to market maturity, what one would also wish for the suspension. After all, not every city has such a relatively well-maintained road network as Munich, where the car was presented at the IAA in 2021.

Why is the suspension the Achilles' heel of this design? Because almost every detail works against it. First there are the tightly dimensioned tires and the low weight, which afficts every car in this class.

But the CT 1 also has the two 7.5 kW electric motors in the back of the wheels. They also worsen the ratio of sprung and unsprung masses. But then the really brilliant basic idea of being able to widen the track width while driving.

However, this also moves the entire wheel suspension in and out, which enormously shortens its action radius for deflection. Just look at how close the fenders hang over the wheels and at the same time they are flush with the body.

A great concept for a city car, but in the videos it's mainly driven by younger people who are better able to handle the bumps of the road.
