Cadillac

2020 Cadillac Lyriq

The first all-electric Cadillac as a foray into the premium class, badged with the 'iq' designator at the end of its name, starting on a new electric Ultium platform unveiled in March. The battery comes from Korean partner LG Chem, which also supplies the Chevrolet Bolt and Ampera-e with pouch cells. A joint factory is planned in the USA.

The battery capacity is 100 kWh, presumably gross. It consists of nickel, cobalt, manganese and aluminium, with an increased proportion of nickel replacing up to 70 percent of the more difficult to extraer cobalt. An 800-volt system like Porsche's is not planned and Tesla's latest charging capacity will not be reached either.

But the interior is not comparable to that of a Model X. It's not just the much praised 33-inch screen, much more integrated than the Byton, it's the handling and overall distribution. It is unclear how many small electrical helpers are at work to hand or open something. Even the steering wheel doesn't look overloaded.

One does not participate in the touch euphoria either, stick with the hand wheel as the control element. Also the head-up display does not have to be laid so many meters into the road here, it is still just visible on the front hood and should even contain elements of augmented reality in the future. At the back there are individual seats, also electrically adjustable and a large control panel in between.

Undoubtedly, it is customary in the USA to exaggerate even more than in Europe at a presentation, but if Super Cruise really comes and is also approved, it is at least a step in the direction of autonomous driving, even if that is already available similar in the Mercedes E class. It promises that hands no longer need to be on the steering wheel, not even touch it.

The additional promise of independent lane selection is more important in the USA than it is here, because in the middle of three-lane interstate lanes you have the choice of swerving to the left or right. The system must therefore explore opportunities for faster advancement. Hopefully autonomous parking will be a little more useful than just showing it to all sorts of people.
