  Chemistry - Metals 2

As you can see above, the vast majority of elements belong to the metals, it is by far the largest group. You have to add the elements with atomic numbers 58-71 and 90-103 below. Almost without exception, they are materials that are characterized by high strength. Nevertheless, they are permanently deformable and can be compacted in such a way that their yield strength and thus their strength is increased.

In the sequence of the table, the properties of the various elements were taken into account at an early stage. And that so well that later discovered could be arranged seamlessly. Perhaps one can which is best explained by the metals that make up about 70 percent of the elements. They are all shiny and malleable, but some react particularly violently with water. They are here for example in the left column.

In the middle the metals are listed with less drastic reactions. The heat and especially the electrical conductivity they are said to have decreases to the right. The name comes from actually rather from the effect between the atoms, the free flow of electrons, which determines the conductivity. The term 'metal' thus indicates the type of bond.

Electrons determine the properties of a substance.

Some metals have magnetic properties in addition to their electrical conductivity. Here we have a few elements in contrasting colors that are not quite regarded as metals. One it is referred to as a semiconductor. Their importance has increased enormously in the last 50 years.

Lithium Atom

Lightest Metal   Lithium   0,53 g/cm3
Heaviest Metal   Osmium   22,5 g/cm3

Osmium Atom

The light metals are highlighted here. Thus all metals with a density of less than 5 kg/dm3 or 5 g/cm3 are designated. It is interesting to note that titanium, the heaviest light metal with 4.5 g/cm3, is almost arranged in the middle block.
