Electrical Coolant Pump



There are pumps that can be disconnected as long as the engine has not reached normal temperature. But they are still mechanically driven with the strongest circulation and 2 kW corresponding power at high engine revs. Mostly much more needed is such a strong circulation if the engine generates much torque at low revs.

Cooling systems for electric pumps are usually optimized for flow.

Proper thermal management is possible in this case only with an electrically driven pump. Of course, here the fuel savings will depend on the operating conditions. Electic pumps are not mechanically connected to the engine and can be placed nearly everywhere. However we want to concentrate on main coolant pumps of internal combustion engines with a normal power range of approx. 200 W.


With no longer commutators in modern electric motors there is only normal wear on the bearings and seals. Of course, such pumps are particularly suitable for hybrid vehicles and internal combustion engines, which can be stopped while driving (sailing). As an additional advantage the electrically driven pump can run after the final stop of the engine and avoid too much residual heat.

More possibilities with variable speed coolant pumps

As part of thermal management special regulations of the engine temperature is possible while driving. Fuel can be saved if operating with higher temperature at partial load lowered at high engine load. Case of knocking combustion in special operational regions, thermal management can, less harmful, lower the temperature instead of resetting the ignition. 01/16
