Transmission - Reconstruction
One has the impression that also the classic cars multiply with the new cars. Nevertheless, most of them become more expensive and particularly recommended during periods of low interest rates as a so-called
investment. All the more it must be wondered, that also quite expensive cars, partly built even before the First World War, be used almost like for racing.
There natural wear is inevitable. We deal here with a vehicle that has been built between the two world wars in the thirties. Measured according to the actual delivered quantity of only 464 cars, its fame surprised. But the
BMW 328 wrote racing history and that is stuck in the mind.
Is it worth at all for so few vehicles a small series for reproduction? Especially because some are likely to be irretrievably lost in World War II. Not many had as much luck as the former BMW factory rider and design
engineer Alexander von Falkenhausen. His BMW 328 has survived the war and occupation hidden behind the scrap of agricultural machines and with wheels buried under a bed of roses.
Yes, ZF Friedrichshafen dares an edition of 55 pieces (calculated without the prototypes) and BMW Group Classic brings in its know-how and the transmissions amongst the 328 owners. The manufacturer's name not
only stands for quality but also for high authenticity. Because the Hurth transmission of the 328 has already peculiarities. The first and second gear are unsynchronized, the gears three and four cone synchronized. After
all the only surviving documents originate from the city archive in Eisenach, the then sole manufacturing site for four-wheeled vehicles.
At that time, apparently completely normal there were within the small number of deliveries even different versions, of which, with certain exceptions, in principle one has made to the basis of the reconstruction one of
the last. For this purpose. the International Automobile Federation (FIA) and the World Association of Classic Car Clubs (FIVA) also had to confirm the authenticity. 12/15
