Fuel cell as power generators
It is also referred to as Auxiliary Power Unit, a kind of auxiliary power generators. And so as e.g. scientists in remote areas keep alive their laptops with fuel cells, so this is intended for trucks here,
which sometimes also have long breaks without one could simply let run the engine. Just think, engines up to 16 liters displacement work, so that generators deliver 1.000 up to 3.000 watts at most, at engine idle under
certain circumstances even less.
A fuel cell, which is operated either on the basis of hydrogen nor methanol is superior in operation with diesel fuel also a diesel auxiliary unit. One possible different solution would be a power supply on motorway stations
and also at camping sites, but is that to realise, where the trucks in Germany are standing up to the driveways to the rest area from time to time? After all, one would have to rely on it.
And if truckers use their vehicles practically as a living space despite reduced space offer, you can easily calculate the consumption, including air conditioning. As much as the largest most common used generators at
present, the fuel cell supplies and achieves up to 40 percent efficiency. One says that even of the diesel engine, but not in power generation.
So, according to the information of the manufacturer, makes it even more sense, to operate the thing even while driving. However, the device is firmly integrated, for example, via fuel lines. A possible use as a range extender
together with a small diesel tank is still not possible at the moment. Moreover, one can recharge with a maximum of 3 kW at most the high-voltage battery in rugged terrains. Driving is thus difficult to imagine therewith.
