VW Beetle 1303

It was the first with the so-called elephant feet. The rear lights are meant. They were, like the curved wind screen, preventive measures to expected American safety regulations. It was for nothing, because more room for the head in case of an accident never became any law.

One did not need to be afraid because of the Beetle's sales in the USA, because they were far away from earlier successes. These are the latest changes to the 1303. It was more and more expensive in manufacturing. The very last introduction was the steering rack to make the somewhat complex steering a little bit simpler, but may be not cheaper.

From now on for the last 3 years the Beetle was produced in Emden to make room for the new Golf. Even later, only the convertible was available. The costs and the production moved to Mexico enforced the return to the Beetle with the two zeros at the end. The elephant feet remained.

The picture below shows a special series consisting of 3,500 pieces, the 'yellow-black racer', which, although equipped with the same engine as the series version, was prepared for up to 74 kW (100 hp). Apart from the painting other details were changed: Wider wheels and through slots in the front panel the possibility of a subtle oil cooling.

The fact that the excellent suspension is capable to even greater exploits and even Porsche engines can cope with, show the videos. 10/16
