2020 VW ID.3





Don't bother yourself with trivialities, then you have a chance to be excited about ID.3. Should it happen again that VW enters the market very late and then takes the lead? It will depend mainly on what will be available this year and not much less next year.

We took a look at the new configurator and because the smallest battery does not yet exist in the sales, we chose two basic models, both as economical as possible, one with the middle and one with the large battery. One thing in advance, the ID.3 with the middle battery has a damn similarity to the grey mouse shown above.


Saving just means doing without, whereby you have to reckon with simpler wheel covers on steel rims and the white areas on the C-pillar are also missing. But take a look at the prices above, at the moment about 26.000 € + transfer and registration for a car with 58 kWh battery capacity, 32.000 € for 77 kWh.

For a model 3 from Tesla, 43,880 € are to be transferred, even though the government environmental bonus is still going down. But then this is not a long, but a Standard Range Plus. At the moment one of the large battery from VW similar only the model 3 with two engines available for about 53.000 €. Is that a difference?


Models with as large a battery as possible should actually be the target. Why? The battery will wear off over the years anyway and only the largest model will have sale success then. It also charges faster. By the way, the stated ranges of Tesla and VW are quite identical.

However, the Model 3 will probably still charge much faster. VW tries to counter the advantages of the unique network of Tesla superchargers with a rather universal charging card. This currently leads at a very reasonable price at Ionity and public charging points, but is combined to monthly fees.


By the way, the large battery can also be charged at home for about 0,30 € per kWh overnight. VW already knew that this is not possible at the Schuko socket and charges an additional 170 € for this cable. (!). No, charge three-phase and book the cheap quick charge tariffs in the holiday months.

This brings us very close to the qualities of the Model 3, especially since the payload via a large tailgate and the large interior of the ID.3 win the comparison. At the dashboard it ends in a tie, because the VW can't keep up with the large center screen of the Tesla, but has an additional small display adjustable with the steering.


Yes, the Model 3 has the more powerful engine, accelerates better and is much faster, but who needs more than the 150 kW (204 PS) and 160 km/h of the id.3 on the motorway? Anyway, you have to be careful with the attention to the performance data of electric cars, whether they are not only available for a short time (peak performance).

By the way, we see the fact that the ID.3 with the large battery is only approved for four adults as an advantage for those who do not need more. In this case you can rely on the most comfortable close possible spring rate. And maybe VW will find a possibility to put at least three children on the back seats.

You already notice, no matter what Elon Musk comes up with for countermeasures, we predict a great future for ID.3. It only has to be produced quickly in the usual VW quantities, and the quality should not suffer. As I said, it would not be the first time that VW has succeeded in this.
