 2025 Renault Twingo
They are very proud to have developed this car in two years. That would also be justified and a big compliment for the crew, according to Renault in France and China. But if you look at the data, the balance of
power is quite different.
The subsidiary Ampere is the only branch in France involved in this development. It should be more responsible for electrical engineering. Since the Twingo Z.E. was launched in 2020, the location of the drive
system has enabled the battery capacity to be increased by 6.2 kWh.
Ampere is also set to be the head of the group, which still consists of ACDC (what a name) in China and the tried-and-tested production facility in Novo Mesto, where a total of 5 million Renault and among
others Smart vehicles have already been built.
The assembly plant is undergoing a change, as the previous model, the Twingo Z.E., and the Smart 4 all had the motor in the rear. The new one now has a floor tray like for a spare wheel and no more space
under the front hood, which can no longer be opened – Smart sends its regards.
To refill the windshield washer fluid, you can use the middle of the three ventilation openings that used to be on the Twingo. Coolant and brake fluid obviously can no longer be checked visually, but perhaps at
least electronically.
The wheelbase has been increased by approximately 6 cm, which initially promises greater driving comfort and more space for the battery. At the same time, we are dealing with an additional 17.4 cm in
length. Together with the switch to front-wheel drive, this has an impact on the turning circle, which is so important in city traffic, increasing it by approximately 1.1 meters compared to its predecessor.
The overhangs have also become larger, which is not apparent from the car's appearance. Which brings us slowly to the design. Renault has set itself the aim of redesigning its models, which so far only
seems to have been reasonably successful with the R5.
The R4 is a disaster. Hardly anyone, if you whispered it in their ear beforehand, would think to see a connection there, and the closer they ever came to the R4, the less likely they would. And why does
Renault produce so many cars that get in each other's way?
The head of BYD Europe was recently asked why the company was launching such a wide range of models. Yes, what else would you expect when you've made a successful start with the BYD Seagull, for
example? In contrast, the Twingo has a hard time, not with the engine, but with the battery and range.
But in the end, we can give the new Renault really good marks for design. It is truly reminiscent of its predecessor and, although it has matured, it has retained its youthfulness and practicality.
