1966 Peugeot 204 C
Rarely coupé and convertible of the same type have been styled so differently. Only the front is similar. For the coupé the opportunities have been used, unlike the sedan with notchback to create a
loading space with folding rear seats and practical access by a large tailgate.
Pininfarina is said to have been involved in the two versions. The missing 23 centimeters in length will only be perceived really when looking at the convertible. Here also, the roof is correspondingly short and even the
hardtop has no parallels with the coupé. A true two-seater, in which you can close the roof without getting off.
Presumably also by its self-reliance the coupé wins the main French design prize, the 'Grand Prix de l'Art et de l'Industrie Automobile' in the fall of 1966. By this chief designer Paul Bouvot and his pupil
Gérard Welter are honored. And the customers didn't hesitate, 40,000 in three years for the by a third more expensive version, bestseller in its segment.
The manager of Peugeot have courage, asking in an advertising campaign for the 204 coupé with the phrase: 'What is fast, french and expensive?' They have become finally brave at Peugeot. For years since
the war, they had presented with unsophisticated design which covered the undoubted innovations. Now, with the first front-wheel drive, they take their chance. 08/16
