1968 Morgan Plus 8

Until the appearance of this Morgan with V8 engine, it is only available with a maximum of four cylinders. It was an ultimately very successful search for a suitable engine. Originally it came from GM, for example used in the Buick. A very modern construction for the time with aluminum head and block. But they could not handle it, so that Rover got the design and made it usable for various British manufacturers.

The Plus 8 was only built as long as this engine was available. It had thus in contrast to the model Plus 4 only one engine, which was used over the entire term. However, the Plus 8 came after a break of eight years back on the market with a BMW V8 (see video). Look at this site.

The engine goes through various levels of performance, is down- and upsized again. Laws for exhaust gas detoxification influenced its development. They caused performance losses, which were more than compensated by switching to gasoline injection or displacement increase up to 4.6 liters in total. The car was said to be the lightest series V8 with an above-average acceleration. However, it is slowed down at higher speeds by unfavorable aerodynamics.

For a long time, a four-speed Moss transmission was at work here. It had no good reputation, is e.g. frowned upon by Jaguar owners. However, it seemed to fit a Morgan rather, because it wants to be treated energetically in certain situations and in others more gently in specific others. Similar to the springs of the Morgan, or the suspension, because actually a Morgan has no springs, at least no effective . , , 12/17
