 2018 Mercedes GLE
Because Toyota was about 3 years earlier with the RAV4, Mercedes says that with the M-Class they founded the segment of Premium SUVs in 1997. This is then eagerly received
and when repeating the 'Premium' forgotten, which should not be unpleasant to the manufacturer.
In Tuscaloosa, where also the new GLE is produced, Mercedes builts according to its own information a 'battery' factory. The whole report is about investment, jobs, etc. Nowhere
It becomes clear that this does not mean the battery cells themselves, but only the implementation of already existing batteries into cars.
Reassuring that the federal government is considering finally funding the production of battery cells after spending billions for the development of mobility in colleges and similar institutions. CATL, China's largest
battery cell manufacturer, is now building a plant in Erfurt. VW also had such plans but shelved it.
What do these plans have to do with the new Mercedes GLE? Actually, a hydrogen variant of the GLC was announced in 2018 of this vehicle at the IAA 2017. But even if it would come, it has little chance against the
Hyundai Nexo because of lack of range. By the way, when it comes, then only for selected fleet customers.
Of course, this does not apply to the variant with an internal combustion engine presented here. Of the seven SUV models, Mercedes has sold over 5 million since 1997, a third of al sod Mercedesl, 540,000 of them in
alone the first eight months of 2018. The GLE and the M-Class together have a share of 2 million.
There is a little more than 12 volts in the new GLE, namely 48 volts, e.g. used for the new, wickedly expensive (see below) suspension package. Presumably it is a world novelty that both, suspension
as well as damping of each wheel can be changed individually. Here swinging while going stuck in the sand, is not meant lengthwise, but more an up to 10 centimeters strong up and down rocking (video below). In the
case of the GLE, you can let do it your car by only pushing a button.
The 12 volts are in addition to the start with electric motor to use as a boost, which makes up only 16 kW (22 hp), but a remarkable 250 Nm additional. The 4MATIC, which now up to 100 percent can send to the
front or rear axle, makes the world perfect both for off-road and on-road. Probably not quite as strong as a motorcycle, the car can also lean into the curve.
Even the dashboard deserves praise. The slightly overloaded steering wheel is not indispensable, but there are still a few buttons left for quick operation. The touchpad with spatial
detectable gesture control is now mounted high enough and seamlessly merges into the display behind the steering wheel. Not quite as eye-catching as in other Mercedes models, but pretty air jets are arranged
underneath. It should be so. The center console now has handles for particularly spectacular off-road driving. 11/18
