2018 Mercedes G-Model

Turn signals disappear in an accident - pedestrian safety

Pictures of the interior of the new G-Class have been circulating for some time. This fragmentary publication often has the ulterior motive that the products are reported multiple times. Although we do not allow ourselves to be invited to free travel to often distant places of introduction of new cars, we nevertheless remain dependent on vehicle data, pictures and possibly even videos. However, we only introduce new products when we have enough material.

More than 300.000 copies delivered since 1979.

So now is there a new G-class, after almost 40 years, and at the first glance only little changed. As with the real Jeep (Wrangler), the silhouette of the box has remained unchanged and is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future. Unlike Jeep, however, the front axle has changed significantly.

All-Terrain - High-Comfort - Opera-Gala - Family-Van

Perhaps until now, the opinion prevailed that a 'real' off-road vehicle in addition to all locks, large slope angles and special transmission ratios also should have a rigid axle forward, because it can compensate better the greatly different levels between the front and rear axle. Daimler now belies this theory.

According to the manufacturer 170 kg lighter.

In today's all-wheel technology, it seems no longer a problem when a wheel is far in the air and so do two diagonally arranged, between which the vehicle tilts back and forth. That is at best an optical problem. There are hardly any problems with the performance. On the contrary, from now on not only almost every terrain will be taken under the wheels, but also the times will be registered and continuously improved. Crazy, right?

And what was most important for Daimler? Of course, the off-road characteristics. And yet they make the car 12 cm wider and just for the occupants a good 5 cm longer, combined the well-known large display and the ventilation nozzles underneath (compare above old to below new) with the steering wheel from the S-Class. But then they removed the slightly trampling front axle. Additional damping settings mean that the car can now be almost luxuriously comfortable.

First delivered is the car after the show in Detroit (USA) only as a 500 with V8 petrol engine. Incidentally, one third of all buyers of the G-Class have so far opted for the G63, which they still have to wait for a little while. Then comes a diesel version, the only reasonable to this ample unreasonable car. 01/18
