2022 Mercedes Actros L

There are several reasons to report on the Actros now. For one, we just looked at the Iveco S-Way and the newly released Ford S-Max. So it makes sense to take a look at the market leader from Mercedes again, especially since we last reported on the Actros with combustion engine in 2018.

However, the eActros has already appeared twice in our posts, namely 2018 and 2021.

This may also be the future focus of the work of Daimler Truck Holding AG, as the manufacturer is called after the spin-off from Daimler AG and the IPO at the end of 2021. The Mercedes-Benz Group AG supposedly only holds 35 percent. The corresponding subsidiaries such as FUSO in Spain and Freightliner in the USA as well as the entire bus division have also gone along.

While the eActros has been around for a long time, the development of an Actros with a fuel cell is brand new and was probably mainly initiated by government subsidies. Supposedly one is already at the road test.

Although the Actros has gone through several stages of development since 2018/2019, some of which are also called the 'New Generation', the one that has changed the most was actually the one from 2011, also known as the 'New Actros'. This is also where the generation of in-line engines came into being instead of the previous V engines, one of which was the 471, now just only in the new Actros L.

OM 471, R-6, 12,8 liters
2.100 Nm, 310 kW (421 hp)
2.200 Nm, 330 kW (449 hp)
2.300 Nm, 350 kW (476 hp)
2.500 Nm, 375 kW (510 hp)
2.600 Nm, 390 kW (530 hp)

Back then, they were ahead of the competition with new, larger cabs and all-round disc brakes, but that's not the case anymore. Nevertheless, the variety remains a plus point for the Actros, including the engines and the chassis. What the truck still lacked was LED light. The Actros L has now caught up on this point.

However, the company is still ahead of the competitors thanks to the further development of the assistance systems. In addition to the emergency stop if the driver fails, the highly adaptive cruise control, which knows exactly what the world looks like in front of it and takes appropriate precautions, should also be mentioned here, even if there is no vehicle in front of it.

One can probably assume that the Actros was perhaps taught more fuel-saving ability through many small measures, whereby haulage companies recoup at least part of the higher purchase price.
