1908 Harley Davidson

Walter Davidson (picture above) successfully participates in endurance competitions. And he got a new record saving fuel with 188 miles per gallon (1.25 l/100km). The first motorcycle was delivered to a police station in Detroit (Michigan). The number of employees doubled once more this year.

Until the last year, Harley-Davidson had to do without suspension. For the rear wheel it took until the time after the Second World War, but at the front there had been constructed a spring system last year.

It had a front fork made from pipe with an elliptical cross-section, the wheel of which was mounted forward on short swingarms. They were supported by a second pair with a circular cross-section, containing the helical springs. It was a relatively short-stroke suspension.

From 1908, William S. Harley could again apply himself with full force to the company. He finished his studies with a diploma as an engineer, but remained a learner, especially in practical matters. 11/16
