2016 Ford News from the three-cylinder
We already know that Ford is proud of its three-cylinder, the 'Engine of the year 2014'. Newly, on the other hand, is he now equipped with cylinder switch-off. Thus one-third of its cubic capacity is only
0.67 liters. Only oldi fans knew so far that you can drive a car with it.
But there is recently the charging system, which helps the remaining two cylinders to change their operating points so that a higher efficiency is achieved. Schaeffler-Group helped to develope the switch-
off for the first cylinder and, of course, its fuel injection.
One would have expected the switch-off of the middle cylinder to get the heat sources from both sides. It takes place in only 14 milliseconds up to 4500 rpm, which also corresponds to about one
revolution at this speed. The occupants of these events are nearly not concerned thanks to a complex control system.
The cracking point, why so far in a large series engine it has not yet tried, are the crankshaft offset angles. If you leave two out of four cylinders, you still have balanced ignition angles of 360°. On the other
hand, the three-cylinder system offers 240° and 480°. The Ford text speaks flowery of 'New crankshaft offset' and we keep a little space here to fathom them. . . 11/16
