History - DKW 7

The history of the 500 is more interesting in view of the future automotive production. In 1927 it has a two-cylinder engine as drive naturally in the for two-strokes useful in-line version. But this is still air-cooled and only in 1928 receives by replacement of cylinder and head a water cooling. This reconstruction can be carried out even later. Thus, from a 'Z500' a 'ZSW500' ('S' for sport).

Almost 1500 RM are due for this in 1928. The now generated 10 kW (14 HP) let this drive the first time appear to be useful for a (real) car. The Slaby-car has basically already done a lot of preparatory work. There are bases around the world, e.g. in a famous department store in London. The sales to Japan offers opportunities in spite of the local bankruptcies after the earthquake of 1923. Of course, the number of dealers has increased significantly due to the successful motorcycle distribution.

After the company Slaby-Beringer 1924 but goes into bankruptcy, Rasmussen takes over. As an interim solution to a small car with two-stroke engine is developed and built a cab with electric drive, not the worst solution for Berlin and the flat area there. So one chugs with 3.4 kW (4.6 HP) from one battery charge to another. This time the designation 'Der Elektrische Wagen'.

From 1928, the factory operates inter alia as Spandauer Automobilfabrik. Now it is only a short step to a front engine of the big DKW motorcycle via a rag joint and a long cardan shaft to the driven rear axle already, the first DKW car, still with rear wheel drive.

'P 15' is called the first DKW, because one has done something for the development of torque, for a car even more important than for a motorcycle. The displacement is now 600 cc, but the power increases by only 0.7 kW (1 HP). After all, 80 km/h are indicated as top speed. The axes have already for later models the typical cross-leaf spring.

To be able to succeed in terms of performance, soon one wants also to offer four-cylinder. Because in motorcycle racing division one is quite successful with the 500 with charging pump (25 HP), the V4 grows into a kind of V6 where the two charge pumps are counted here as a cylinder. To get straight to the point, the '4=8 'is a disaster, the DKW caused a lot of trouble as it is finally on the market. 06/12
