Perhaps it is even more common in the USA to identify with a brand than in Europe, although for a long time the cars there hardly differed except in design specialties. That's how it seems, at least in the 50s, between Buick
and Oldsmobile. Cadillac is clearly above and Chevrolet below the two. LaSalle is trying to bridge the gap to the upside.
After all, they all belong to the same General Motors group. If buyers commute between brands, it's less of a problem than if they switch to Chrysler or even Ford. After all, Buick, founded in 1899, has the honor of being the
oldest car brand still in existence, just ahead of Oldsmobile and Cadillac.
