2026 BMW iX5

Yet another car with a high front end. As if the car wasn’t high enough as it is. Will that windscreen – which is far too slanted – even fit? It’s surprising how the designers still manage to achieve a relatively good cW value. We would have thought it was much worse.

Actually, despite the four-wheel drive, there should be enough space underneath to fit a relatively large frunk. But that’s not the case – a tribute to the fact that the X5 is still available with a petrol or diesel engine. BMW is therefore pursuing several options at once.

The X5 is even set to be available with a hydrogen powertrain. The manufacturer had already reached that stage 20 years ago. But BMW, just like Mercedes, has received subsidies. Mercedes put them into a truck. We don’t see a future for either of these projects; we actually think the whole thing is a waste of money.

However, this does not detract from the iX5’s performance. It now has battery capacity up to the limit of the driving license class, charging capacity accordingly. However, this seems to push the purchase price above €100,000. Mercedes still manufactures its flagship model in Germany, whereas BMW does so in Spartanburg, the BMW Group's largest plant.

The vehicle is also available with a six-cylinder inline gasoline engine producing 294 kW (400 PS) or 540 Nm, paired with an electric motor (capacity not specified) producing 13 kW (18 PS) or 200 Nm, as well as with 230 kW (313 PS) or 450 Nm and an electric motor with 26.5 kW net and 145 kW (197 PS) or 280 Nm.

There's also a diesel model, which is also equipped with a three-liter six-cylinder engine. It has 210 kW (286 PS) and 650 Nm, as well as an electric motor - with no capacity specified - that delivers 13 kW (18 PS) and 200 Nm. The diesel model reaches 230 km/h, while the gasoline models - including the plug-in - are limited to 250 km/h.

BMW wouldn't be BMW if there weren't also a three-liter model with turbo power, 313 kW (426 PS) and 540 Nm, and completely without any electric assistance. The smallest gasoline model is about 600 kg more lightweight than the iX5, the diesel model is about 500 kg, the plug-in hybrid is only 300 kg, and the large gasoline model without an electric motor only 200 kg.
