  Body - Luggage/Load Compartment 3

The Americans are fine. Since they traveled early with street cruisers, their lane and parking markings date accordingly. No problems getting out of a wide car. The king of the transporters is the pickup. With four-wheel drive it delivers everywhere, possibly even in desert-like areas.

It must be afraid of rain, e.g. not in California. The height of the cargo is almost unlimited. And for bulk goods that could damage the cargo bed, you get a trailer, maybe even tiltable. Because the trailer load is apparently nearly limitless, too.

For middle european wheather there are covers, also a bit more stable ones. Or the car mutates to the station wagon with a roof construction. Therefore, the solution with the two flaps, the lower often endures even more than two people. And you can choose between one, one and a half and two seating rows at the front.

In Europe, the pickup is rare. Here one buys a station wagon, multi-purpose vehicle or SUV, if one needs a lot of space. Between the station wagon and the SUV, the differences are not very big, because the latter has more height in addition to a corresponding high load floor, so that the total load capacity remains about the same.

In the past, the back seat folded forward, today usually only does the backrest, in two parts in different division or even in three parts. There may be English luxury cars, where a partition wall in earlier times used between driver and passengers protects against coldness through the open tailgate.

It is nice, of course, if the seat bench as in the Opel Zafira above is completely or partially movable. Then you do not have to fold the backrests to enlarge the luggage compartment. There were also relatively easily removable seats as in the video below. It also created a flat cargo space, but meanwhile the manufactores think, also because of the increasing weight of the seats, it can no longer be expected from the customer.

Here's a folding solution to get a level floor.

Instead of lower in the front part of the cargo compartment, the cars were higher behind, although now the spare wheels there are missing. This results for much partly nonsense used storage space. After all, good if different heights are possible to cover this room.

Obviously nobody wants to leave parts of the car for transport at home. This is especially true for the cover of the cargo space. It is either sloppy and disappears as a roller blind, or more stable and becomes a problem. There are even vehicles, where it disappears electrically in a space-saving position.

Remains the third row of seats. Here you can see a folding solution in the pictures above and below, too. Unfortunately, those on longer journeys have the charm of a night spent, namely neither cornering nor any seating comfort. For the second row of seats then perhaps a step to loading floor is the lesser evil.

Remains the eternal criticism of the high loading sill. Some people even measure exactly on one centimeter. They forget that a particularly low loading sill either creates a more unstable rear body e.g. in an accident or significant weight at other, usually not visible spot results.

By the way, with the already at the beginning mentioned folding down flap the tailgate can be shorter and in close parking easier to be opened, but the access to the depth of the luggage compartment is rather more difficult. There is such a construction even with fold-out fabric cushions. Overall, however, an additional hinged rear window may be less expensive.
