 Just leaking?

Sometimes someone says something that relates to your own field of expertise. If this is not entirely correct, the question arises as to how wrong the information must be, in one's own opinion, in order to intervene. After all, it could be said afterwards that XY was there, listened, so it can't be wrong.

My advice is to explain in a reasonably determined manner what could be wrong, and possibly provide the correct solution. But as soon as you feel that it is not being accepted, and that happens quite often, stop your intervention.

Any references to why you know better are not helpful at all. Because YX was asked about it at the time, and that's how he explained it, so it can't be wrong. Don't even try to prove that you are right when it happens in your own home, e.g. by using some file folders.

However, this section will deal with an even more complicated case. A teacher friend, who is higher in rank than you, talks about the problems with his diesel car. Something is spraying through the area, and he hopes to get to the workshop the next day without too much damage.

Unfortunately, you then become so preoccupied with the problem that you ask to learn more about it, but you are denied access to the garage and a demonstration of the defect. It is typical for teachers, not only of this subject, to always start from the theory they teach their students, but does not always have the right connection to practice.

After a tough struggle, you finally make it to the garage and discover a small hole in the return line of the common rail system, through which a tiny jet of fuel is escaping. Immediately, the alarm bells start ringing, because if there is that much pressure on it, then at least one injector must be damaged.

Having said this and pointed out that they should not just have this small hose replaced in the workshop the next day, you say goodbye. Upon inquiry, it is learned that the repair shop had in fact only replaced the small hose and that the car has been running fine ever since.

You can imagine that at first you look like an idiot. Now the research really begins. One learns that the possible pressure from the other side than the injectors has been completely and unjustifiably disregarded. Later, we discover that there are even systems where this pressure is particularly high, reaching up to 10 bar.

Now you might think that everything went well and that, on the contrary, you benefited from the experience because you learned something new. The relationship with the then opposite party alone proved to be slightly disrupted from then on. There was a feeling of disrespect, veiled by politeness.

You can't feel proud of what you've achieved; instead, you're left with the idiot, the rash one who, despite urgent warnings, sticks his neck out too far. This has happened to me quite often when I, perhaps a little too hastily, made assertions and then met with disapproval from others.

Consequently, the relationship never really got off the ground again, limited to brief exchanges when one met. It's a shame, really. Certainly, there are clearly too many who simply make assertions, but in this case, it did not happen in public.

Why not give the chance to make amends and occasionally enjoys the new knowledge and perhaps also new questions that this has brought? No, one resents and condemns, exacerbated by a long period of time. Similar to the example above: Changing a judgment is probably only possible with a huge excess of authority, whether justified or not.
