Refractometer as a workshop-tester
Refractometers are not only there to check the coolant, they can also be used for the, hardly ever still done, battery-acid check. A few drops onto the prism, close the lid and the amount of anti-freeze becomes visible on
the scale.
Available with digital measuring technology and their own light-source, they are also already applied in various other fields, e.g., by winegrowers. It is also important, that one doesn't have to consult any tables because
the freezing point of the mixture is given out right away. As a matter of interest, one can also determine the amount of moisture in the brake-fluid, which means that one doesn't have to replace the brake-fluid on
suspicion.
The measuring principle makes use of a prism, of which the refraction-index is known. A prism is a transparent optical element, which refracts light when it is applied at an angle, depending on the wavelength the light
is broken down into various angles or even reflected. If the relationship between the refractive indices and the mixing ratio is known, one can then conclude the one from the other. 01/13
