Crankshaft 3

This is the 8.2 kg crankshaft for four-cylinder in-line engines from the VW Group. It is made of ductile iron (GJS).

Advantages
1. Fills the mold exactly.
2.Good machinability.
3.Good castability.
4.Self-lubricating.
5.Good damping against vibrations.
6.Good thermal conductivity.

Because the material with 7.2 kg/dm is not just particularly light, in crankshafts for four-cylinder engines the diameters of the main bearings are reduced (for example, from 52 to 48 mm) and chooses for only four counterweights instead of eight (totally -1.6 kg). Parts of remaining tasks are taken over by the balance shafts and the primary part of the two-mass flywheel.

The material for this crankshaft is indicated with the label 'EN-GJS-800', which means a for ductile cast iron high tensile strengthof 800 N/mm². Other caracteristics such as the shear strength increase, the important bending strength are equal and the thermal conductivity are slightly reduced. It follows the addition 'Modified'.

This crankshaft was produced using the shell molding process. The shell mold, into which the liquid cast iron is placed without pressure (gravity casting), has a wall thickness of a few millimeters. It is made of sand and synthetic resin. The latter make the method a little bit more expensive, because it can not be recovered for further use.

There is a certain temperature (for example, 280°C) at which the two substances mix to a form mask and a higher one (for example, 450°C) for hardening. For ease of disassembly a form mask usually consists of two halves. 06/16
