Cubic Capacity

The displacement of an individual cylinder is calculated the same as the cylinder-volume. In this case however, the cylinder-height is given as 's', the distance between the top and the bottom dead center. It is in fact, an imaginary cylinder between the two piston positions. The displacement thus, depends on the bore of the cylinder and the offset of the crankshaft.
The largest total displacement of a petrol engine is probably 27 litres which appeared in 1923. Since diesel engines are used in large ships, the individual displacement of only one cylinder can easily be as much as one cubic meter (1000 litres).
