Air Suspension (truck)

Assignment

As long as a rigid truck axle is guided by leaf-springs, its construction is relatively simple. At best, oscillation dampers and stabilsers can still be added. It becomes difficult if this axle - which is optional - should also be air- sprung...

Function

The most important wheel guiding elements are the external, short trailing arms shown in green, they are connected by pivot points to the chassis (frame). If the two rods which form a triangle, above in the frame, are added, then the wheel guidance is actually complete.
To better compensate for the high axle load, and to allow the air-suspension to respond even more sensitively, two air spring-bellows are installed which are connected to each other by a low bracket. The rear spring-bellows is shifted somewhat to the rear, to make space for the compressed air disc-brake assembly, which is not shown here. From the other side, the (blue) oscillation damper engages, as near as possible to the axle.
