Hummer

We hope it is possible only to consider briefly the history and problems of the Hummer, because the actually interesting is the unprecedented construction of an SUV. However, it is meant here the H1.

Born was the project as a multi-billion dollar order to the company AM General in Indiana, a wholly owned subsidiary of American Motors Corporation. It became a so-called High M obility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle. The military made from it in short form 'Humvee' what became subsequently to 'Hummer'.

AM General -> General Motors (1999)

That would be rather remained in the military secret area, if Arnold Schwarzenegger did not want to use such a vehicle for civilian use and AM General would not been taken over by General Motors. Consequently, the watered-down versions H2 and H3 were created, which reached about special importers to Europe also.

As if that were not enough to report, the Hummer also was in the firing line in many meetings of the Senate after the offensive of the Americans in Iraq, when it turned out that the heavy vehicle was unsuitable to protect soldiers from explosive devices by terrorist organizations. The only slow-starting production of reinforced models could not really reduce the number of zinc coffins.

So, that was hopefully short enough, but unavoidable as background. Technically, the H1 is the only true mid-engine car. Here no compromises have been made, the motor is arranged between driver and passenger. However, the vehicle is already thereby colossal wide for a non-truck. 2.2 meters achieved no car, even when measured above the mirrors.

One disadvantage of the design is that you need a ladder or special climbing abilities to check the oil level. It's just a no-compromise construction. If it would have rigid axles, then this would need additional gearboxes on the wheels (portal axles). With the independent suspension and the huge tyres will achieved a ground clearance of more than 40 centimeters.

Also, the diesel engine is a good choice, otherwise the consumption would even more increase. It is so high that it even alarms Americans. Amazingly, the only part in really all three Hummer models is the automatic transmission, for a torque of a good 300 Nm to almost 600 Nm. The operation of the propulsive aids by briefly pressing the brake pedal seems to be resolved well.

Finished production H1 (2006).

The civilian version differs clearly from the original type in technical terms. First there is the diesel engine, only moderately inflated by a turbocharger and from the performance not really usable for driving pleasure fetishists. You may have guessed what engine it gets under the direction of GM. It is the classic V8, same for all GM products. For this purpose, the conversion to rear rigid axle seems to fit.

At the consumption, the differences between Europe and the United States become apparent. At one-third of costs on fuel in US, the 25 litres/100 km normal consumption are better to bear. After all, sensitive feet can throttle the consumption by one-third, which corresponds approximately to the normal ration of the H3. However, one can do little to alter the poor roadability on the narrow European roads, the decisive four-wheel skills once more as the agony of choice with the tyres.

Oh, we almost forgot it, the attention factor. Without it, you barely come through the traffic. And by no means an envy debate, but rather friendliness about this change in the normal monotony of daily traffic. Whether that here perhaps is the reason for buying such a car and not his off-road features? 05/14
